Here it is… the answer to everything

With the release today of the report “Australia’s Health 2018” by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, we have a snapshot into the current trends in health in Australia and it’s not necessarily a situation in which we can say “Australians all let us rejoice”.

Although the trend is positive in terms of smoking, drinking and childhood immunisation rates, half of all Australians are reported as having a chronic condition and these conditions tend to be responsible for our deaths.

63% of Australians aged over 18 years are overweight or obese. 63% ?! We are on average fatter than two thirds of the 34 other OECD countries. That can’t be good.

To try to maintain a healthy BMI and reduce my risk of developing a chronic health condition, I’ve been gradually eating more veggies and less processed foods and meats for the last couple of years. I didn’t know that I was looking for a word to describe my food choices but here it is anyway… I’m officially a “Flexitarian”. Yes, I know that’s pretty much just a hipster word for a vegetarian who likes to eat a juicy steak occasionally but if it means that I live a happier, healthier and potentially longer life we’ll, I’m ok with that.

Of course… there is the other side of the argument too…
